I wanted to be a vet a long time ago. That was before i realised how difficult it was to get into vet school, and also because there probably wouldn't be much fun looking after cats and dogs and the odd gerbil in good old spore. But, today i am reminded of why i chose medicine over vet science, and why doctors could probably become vets but not vice versa!
Dad took my dog, Malte to the vet cos' alongside her old age, she had developed bilateral cataracts gone a little deaf and somehow exacerbated her oh-so-delicate eczema. Mind you, this long-haired maltese of ours is used to being sayang-ed by my mother who spoils her with air-conditioning and ice-cubes in her water. Oh..not to mention organic doggie food. I don't even get organic peanuts, not that i eat nuts anyway...
anywhoos...dad went there with the intention of asking for a cataract operation in improving malte's quality of life etc. first thing mr vet says is "Your dog is deaf and blind, would you like her put down?"
Excuse me - I do not want her put down thankouverymuch. Obviously, there is the great lack of communication skills. And what sort of question is that anyway? Yes yes, i know doggie cremations and the whole pallava is quite a money-making business. BUT STILL!!!
Our little maltese has been with us since i was still in primary school! and she's still the same fiesty manja doggie that she was the day we brought her home from the pet shop (also the day i almost killed her, but that's a story for another day). she's relatively healthy, albeit plagued with cataracts and a tad hard of hearing, AND she can still climb up 30 spiral steps ok.
Bottom line, i don't agree with euthanasia be it homo sapiens or canis lupus. And as you can tell from this entry - YES MR VET, I AM STILL BLOODY OFFENDED.
Currently eating: 2am snack of pineapple juice and thai chili crisps. I just had to do those jaw exercises.
